Hawaii unveils plans for smart meter roll out

By Tryllium Staff

Nearly half a million commercial and residential electricity customers in Hawaii will receive smart meters between now and 2015 as part of an agreement between the Hawaiian Electric Company and Sensus Metering Systems.

Sensus’ FlexNet system allows two-way communication between customers and Hawaiian Electric. The iCon smart electric meters provide on-demand reads, remote connect/disconnect services, and notifications of outages and restoration.

The mass roll out of the system, which is still subject to approval by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, will help support Hawaiian Electric’s commitment to reduce its customers’ energy costs through flexible pricing options and usage by having access to real-time consumption information.
